Master colourist Malcolm painted frenetically producing many hundreds of works .
He consumed vast quantities of gouache and paper .
Often ruthless with his work he was capable of great acts of destruction and was known to burn , tear up manuscripts or just throw out , give away great piles of his creative output .
His genius was largely unrecognised by his peers who often ridiculed his work as primitive or naive . Neither of which were the case.
He considered himself an ugly man and was known to insist that mirrors were covered up when he was invited to dinner.
"when a monkey looks into a mirror he sees a monkey, when a man looks in a mirror he also sees a monkey."
